However, just outside the palace walls—along the peaceful canal that links to the Summer Palace—there’s a hidden gem that most tourists never see.
Technically, swimming inside the Summer Palace is not allowed.
But, step just beyond the gates and you’ll find a . Here, on hot Beijing days, you’ll see families, elderly swimmers, teens doing backflips, and strangers becoming friends in the water.
This isn’t a commercial pool. It’s not marked on TripAdvisor. But it’s one of the best places to experience real local life in Beijing.
The canal runs along the eastern edge of the Summer Palace, near the entrance by the subway station Beigongmen (Line 4).
If you walk along the riverbank just outside the palace walls, you’ll soon spot where people gather to swim, especially during late mornings and early evenings in summer.
Search “Beigongmen Subway Station” and walk east along the canal from there.
You’ll find makeshift ladders, shaded spots to sit, and often a small crowd of locals chatting, swimming, and playing in the water.
While this isn’t an official swimming zone, it’s well-loved and regularly used by locals.
The water is relatively clean compared to many city canals, and the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.
