Winter hiking in Beijing is about discovering the city’s frozen beauty. As someone who’s hiked every season for years, I’ve found one loop that transforms into a magical wonderland when the snow falls: the Tianquan Temple to Qiyin Temple trail. Here’s why this should be your next winter adventure.
First, the silence. Summer brings crowds, but winter brings something special—complete tranquility. You’ll hear only the crunch of snow underfoot and the distant whisper of wind through frosted pines.
Then, the transformation. What are gentle streams in autumn become delicate ice sculptures. The pine branches wear white coats, and sunlight filtering through creates a sparkling, almost magical atmosphere.
Finally, the clarity. Winter air is crisp and transparent. From the ridge, you’ll see panoramic views of snow-dusted hills stretching toward the horizon—views often hidden by haze in warmer months.
Starting near Tianquan Temple, you’ll immediately enter a world apart. The trail winds through quiet pine forests where snow muffles all sound. It’s just you, your breath visible in the air, and the serene beauty of nature slowing down for winter.
The ruined Qiyin Temple appears like something from a dream—weathered stone arches and crumbling walls softened by snowdrifts. Unlike restored tourist sites, this place feels authentic and contemplative. Standing there, you can almost hear echoes of centuries past.
The climb is gentle but rewarding. Emerging onto the ridge reveals breathtaking vistas: rolling white hills under pale blue skies. This is where you’ll want to pause, take photos, and simply breathe in the expansive calm.
