Panlongshan offers a rare chance to explore one of Beijing’s most atmospheric and historically significant stretches of the Wild Great Wall.
Once a vital northern gateway to Beijing, this frontier was fought over for centuries. It was also the site of fierce battles between Chinese and Japanese forces in 1933—and traces of that conflict can still be seen along the Wall today.
The hike leads towards the famous 24-Eyed Tower, named after its 24 lookout windows. Standing high above the surrounding mountains, this imposing watchtower gave soldiers sweeping views across the frontier and remains one of Panlongshan’s most remarkable sights.
Panlongshan strikes a brilliant balance between wild and accessible. Although the Wall itself remains rugged and unrestored, ticketed entry and paved approach paths make the route less demanding than many of Beijing’s wilder sections. It is ideal for families, first-time hikers, or anyone who wants spectacular scenery and powerful history without turning the day into a serious endurance challenge.
Bring a picnic—or ask us to prepare something delicious—and join us for an unforgettable day exploring a quieter, battle-scarred side of the Great Wall.
