Why is it “Snowing” in Beijing in April? ❄️🤔

If you see white “snow” floating through Beijing in spring… it’s not snow — it’s willow fluff (柳絮). Some visitors may even think they’re witnessing Beijing snow at first glance! 🤣

What is it?

These soft, cotton-like fibers are seeds released by willow and poplar trees.

How to deal with it as a traveler?

It’s more annoying than harmful — and easy to manage if you’re visiting while Beijing’s “snow” is filling the air.

  • 😷 Wear a mask if you’re sensitive
  • 🕶️ Use sunglasses to protect your eyes
  • 👕 Avoid black clothing (it shows everything)
  • 🤧 Keep tissues handy (you’ll understand why)

Why does Beijing have so much?

Decades ago, Beijing planted large numbers of these trees because they grow fast and survive harsh conditions.

The result: a few weeks every spring (mostly in April) when the fluff takes over the streets.

What is the city doing about it?

In recent years, the city has taken steps to reduce the impact.

  • 💧 Applying treatments to keep fluff from spreading
  • ✂️ Trimming and managing trees before peak season
  • 🌲 Gradually replacing female trees (the ones that produce fluff)
