WHAT IS ALIPAY?
In a cashless system, China relies heavily on QR codes linked to Alipay for payments, even at small street vendors.
HOW TO SET UP ALIPAY
To enhance your experience in China, it’s recommended to set up Alipay before arrival. Here’s a step-by-step guide on creating your Alipay account.
Available on both iOS and Android, the Alipay app offers an English version for ease of use.
Using your phone number, register for an Alipay account. You can use any number. I used mine from the UK to make sure it works. You can also change the registered number later if you obtain a Chinese SIM card. A text message with a verification code will be sent.
Connect your bank card, preferably one without foreign currency transaction fees. I used Monzo. I also have a Revolut card. Input the card number and security code.
Consider linking a second card as a backup payment method. These cards will be displayed in your wallet with the last 4 digits.
Ensure you have an internet connection for Alipay. High roaming costs make using your home network impractical. Obtain an eSIM (like Airalo) or a prepaid SIM card online before your trip or purchase a local SIM card upon arrival in China. It’s good to know that almost every building you go will have WiFI, even some outdoor WiFi in parks & some tourist sections of the Great Wall! Don’t be afraid to ask if you’re in need, people are generally very nice & want to help. You don’t need to speak Chinese, just show them your phone & WiFI section and use your trusty hand gestures & smile ◡̈
To access restricted apps in China, use a VPN or a Hong Kong SIM card. Installing the VPN before arrival is essential.
HOW TO PAY WITH ALIPAY IN CHINA
Simply scan the vendors QR code with your Alipay app. Open the app, click ‘Scan,’ point it at the vendor’s QR code, input the amount, select your linked card, and confirm the payment. You can also pay any Chinese persons Alipay by scanning their “receive payment” QR. Alternatively present your QR code for the vendor to scan. Click ‘Pay/Collect,’ and the transaction will be completed upon confirmation.
Lots of restaurants these days also have their menu online & you can order by scanning the QR with your Alipay. The menu will pop up & you pay seamlessly through Alipay.
OTHER FEATURES OF ALIPAY
Explore mini apps within the Alipay app, eliminating the need for multiple downloads. The app features a floating translate button, providing assistance. DiDi Taxi, train tickets, takeout orders, mobile phone top-up, and access to Taobao are additional functionalities offered by Alipay.
POTENTIALLY LIFE SAVING TIP
I know we said above that you cannot Top-Up with your non-Chinese bank card, but try and find someone to help you get some balance on your Alipay. I say this because there could potentially be a problem at some point with your card/ cards. I’ve done this before for someone who asked me to help top-up their phone. People are kinder than most think. Ask around & give some cash to someone and ask them to send money to your Alipay. To do this click on “Pay/Receive” then click on “Receive”. Get them to scan this QR & send the amount you gave them in cash.
