Hidden hutong cafes in Beijing ☕️

Beijing’s coffee scene has boomed. But the best cafes aren’t in shiny malls. They’re tucked in hutongs, behind unmarked doors, and up narrow staircases that make you wonder if you’re lost.

We’ve spent way too much time (and money) finding the real ones.

Here are 5 hidden hutong cafes worth seeking out:

1/4 ONE QUARTER COFFEE LAB – The One With the Wobbly Cup

  • You’ll find 1/4 on Dongsi Liutiao, a quiet hutong off the main drag. The space is split across two floors with plenty of seats — but on weekends, it still fills up fast.
  • Neighborhood: Dongsi
  • The vibe: Industrial-chic, warm lighting, and a mix of laptop workers and friends catching up. Plenty of charging ports by the walls.
  • Find it here: No. 85 Dongsi Liutiao
  • Hours: 8 AM – 7:30 PM
  • What to order: Old Beijing Dirty, Hop Blossom, Specialty coffee drinks

Self Coffee – The One That’s All About You

  • Self Coffee is named exactly what it sounds like — a place to check in with yourself. The space is simple: a central bar, window seats perfect for people-watching, and a few cushions on the front steps for warm days.
  • Neighborhood: Beixinqiao
  • The vibe: Quiet, introspective, almost meditative. After 7 PM, the space transforms into a small bar run by partners. Best of both worlds.
  • Find it here: No.125 Dongsi North Street
  • Hours: 10 AM – 7 PM
  • What to order: Watching Myself from the Side (旁观自己), Dirty, Hand drip

Qieman CAFE (且慢) – The One With the Edible Dictionary

  • Qieman sits right on Dongsi North Street, easy to spot but easy to walk past if you’re not paying attention. The name means “slow down” in Chinese — exactly what they want you to do.
  • Neighborhood: Beixinqiao
  • The vibe: Bright, airy, with large windows facing the street.
  • Find it here: No.117 Dongsi North Street
  • Hours: 10 AM – 8 PM
  • What to order: Pineapple Con Panna, Xinhua Dictionary Cheesecake
  • Btw, Qieman CAFE is right across from the meeting point for Our Beijing’s Hutong Bike experience 😆

Mēr Coffee – The Neighborhood Favorite

  • Mēr is humble. No big sign. No Instagram-bait decor. Just really good coffee and a steady stream of locals who know exactly what they want.
  • Neighborhood: Dongsi
  • The vibe: Simple industrial-chic — grey walls, wooden stools, vintage high chairs. On nice days, grab a seat outside and watch hutong life unfold.
  • Find it here: No. 82-3 Dongsi Sitiao
  • Hours: 8 AM – 6 PM
  • What to order: Almond Dirty, Flat White, Specialty coffee drinks

Qiansanmen (前叁门) – The Rooftop Hideaway

  • This one takes work to find. Tucked deep inside Tiaozhou Hutong in the Dashilan area, Qiansanmen is built on top of an old hutong house. The entrance is easy to miss.
  • Neighborhood: Dashilan
  • The vibe: Rustic, artsy, and slightly hidden. Three resident cats wander in and out — say hi if you see them.
  • Find it here: No. 20 Tiaozhou Hutong, Dashilan
  • Hours: 10 AM – 7 PM
  • What to order: Fried Egg Mocha (荷包蛋摩卡), Snowy Cold Brew, Hand drip

FAQ:

1️⃣ Do these hidden cafes in Beijing have English menus?

Most do. Otherwise you can always use a translation APP or point at pictures 😉

2️⃣ Can I work on my laptop at these Beijing hutong cafes?

Yes, but check the vibe. 1/4 has charging ports and plenty of seats. Self Coffee is smaller and better for reading than laptop work. Qiansanmen is more for relaxing than working.

3️⃣ Are these hutong cafes easy to find without speaking Chinese?

Some are easier than others. Self Coffee and 1/4 are on main hutong streets with clear signage. Mēr and Qiansanmen are more hidden — but finding them is part of the fun I guess 😊

4️⃣ Which hutong cafe in Beijing is best for taking photos?

Qiansanmen has the most iconic rooftop view with hutong rooftops stretching toward Qianmen. 1/4 has an industrial-chic interior with great lighting. Self Coffee’s window seats and front steps are perfect for people-watching shots.

5️⃣ Can I visit multiple hidden hutong cafes in Beijing in one day?

Yes. Self Coffee, Mēr, 1/4, and Qieman are all within a 10-minute walk of each other on or near Dongsi North Street. You can easily hit 3-4 in one afternoon. Save Qiansanmen in Dashilan for another day — it’s across town.
