Essential China Travel APPs You Need Before Visiting Beijing š±
May 11, 2026

Many foreign APPs either donāt work properly in China or work very differently once you arrive.
If youāre visiting Beijing,
these are the APPs you should download before your flight:
š§ The Short List
| APP | What It Does | Replaces |
|---|---|---|
| Alipay / WeChat Pay | Pays for almost everything | Your wallet |
| Didi | Ride-hailing | Uber |
| Baidu Maps | Navigation | Google Maps |
| Messaging + mini-APP ecosystem | ||
| Trip.com | Trains, hotels, flights | Expedia |
| Dianping | Restaurant discovery | Yelp |
1. Alipay & WeChat Pay š°
If you only download two APPs before coming to Beijing, make it these.
China runs on QR codes. Convenience stores, cafƩs, subway stations, restaurants, fruit shops, street food stalls. Everybody scans.
For most travelers, Alipay is slightly easier to set up because foreign cards tend to connect more smoothly. But ideally, get both.

2. Didi: Chinaās Uber š
You type your destination in English, connect payment through Alipay or WeChat, and the APP handles the rest.
Why it matters:
- English interface
- Fast and reliable in Beijing and everywhere in China
- Usually cheaper than taxis
- No awkward communication needed

3. Baidu Maps šŗļø
Google Maps technically works with a VPN, but the information is often outdated or incomplete in China. Subway directions can be unreliable, and walking routes sometimes make questionable life choices.
Baidu Maps is what locals actually use.
Why itās better:
- Accurate subway routes
- Real-time traffic updates
- Walking and bike navigation
- Huge database of local businesses
The English version still isnāt perfect, but itās far more useful than trying to force Google Maps to function properly here.

4. WeChat: The APP That Quietly Runs China š¤
WeChat is technically a messaging APP. In reality, locals use WeChat for everything ā messaging, paying, booking, even scrolling social media. Itās Chinaās everything-APP. (WeChat Pay is just a function of WeChat, itās not a seperate APP.)
But hereās the truth for foreigners:Ā WeChat is hard to verify.Ā The ID check often fails for non-Chinese users. And without verification, you canāt access payments or most mini-programs.
So what should you do?
- Focus onĀ AlipayĀ instead ā itās much easier for foreign tourists to verify, and it covers payments, QR code scanning, Didi, bike-share, and many mini-programs.
- If you manage to verify WeChat? Great. Use it. But donāt stress if you canāt.
- The bottom line:Ā Get Alipay working first. WeChat is a bonus. š

5. Trip.com: The Easiest Booking APP for Foreign Travelers āļø
For foreigners, Trip.com is still the simplest way to book things in China. Trains, hotels, flights, attraction tickets. Everything is in English, and international cards work properly.

6. Dianping (大ä¼ē¹čÆ): The APP Locals Actually Use to Find Food š
If Google Reviews feels unreliable in China, itās because locals barely use it. Dianping is the real restaurant APP here.
This is where people:
- rate restaurants
- find cafƩs and bars
- buy discounts and meal deals
Donāt worry too much about the Chinese interface. You can survive mostly through:
- photos
- ratings
- price indicators

7.Ā Other Useful Things to Download Before China
- Google Translate: Download the offline Chinese (Simplified) language pack before your trip.
- VPN: Install and test it before entering China.
- Apple Maps: Surprisingly decent in Beijing now, especially for walking directions.
